‘Planter Show’ and the art of the potted plant
Created to whet your appetite for the Ken Price ceramics retrospective opening Sept. 16 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, “The Planter Show” opened Thursday with a delightful collection of more than 200 handmade plant containers by established and emerging artists.
“We wanted to give people another layer of context to the Price show,” said Bettina Korek, director of the arts events group ForYourArt, at the opening Thursday night.
Curators Matt Merkel Hess and Lisa Sitko said in a statement that “The Planter Show” was conceived “as a way to consider the sculptural, functional and cultural implications of combining potted plants and art.”
The planters include beer-can designs by Hess, terrariums, delicate hanging tillandsia and some large-scale artworks, including a ceramic piece by Kathleen Ryan that was spouting boxed wine like a chocolate fountain at the opening event. All pieces are for sale and range from about $30 to $2,000.
Artists include Roger Herman, Marisa Suárez-Orozco, Tracy Wilkinson, Joel Tauber, Kerry Tribe and Pilar Wiley.
The four-day show runs through Sunday and includes free seedbombs, ready-to-plant cuttings and a fact-filled container gardening ‘zine. Related events include an indigo-dying workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and a workshop on container gardening from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. Email celebrate@foryourart.com to reserve a spot.
