Henry Road moves to new home in Studio City

Share

Packed with colorful hand-printed textiles, vintage furnishings, unusual housewares and original artworks, the new Henry Road store in Studio City is a lot like the old Henry Road around the corner.

Owner Paula Smail has kept the vibe of her former 500-square-foot retail space alive while adding a sophisticated warmth to the new 1,200-square-foot showroom.

“It’s just bigger,” Smail said of the new space. “I hope it’s still a quirky and eclectic mix of things.”

That eclecticism includes an array of striking pillows of Smail’s design, Moroccan poufs, baskets from Ghana and artworks by Max Neutra, Karen Sikie, Patrick Haemmerlein and Misha Ashton-Moore. Smail also reupholsters a lot of vintage chairs and makes custom lampshades.

Smail sells her own line of fabric, including four new hand-printed designs with a mid-century feel, as well as an abundance of textiles from her travels to Thailand, Australia, Vietnam, Africa and Mexico. Prices start at $50 per yard.

After five years shuttling between the store and a home studio where she designed fabric, Smail now has room for a cutting table behind her retail space. Surrounded by warm gray walls and bolts of fabric, the area will host design classes that she describes as a mix of “creative fun and interior design” in April or May. (Among the potential projects: decoupaging trophy heads.)

One of the savviest additions to the new Henry Road? The Kids Cave, where children can curl up on pillows and read while Mom or Dad shops. (Perhaps that explains the “Where’s Waldo?” books in stock.)

Smail will host an opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. on March 9. Henry Road is at 12240-1/2 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 762-8966.
