A holiday glow at Made by DWC, the Downtown Women’s Center store

Share

Our find of the day: Punched metal candle holders from Made by DWC, the gift shop launched last year by the Downtown Women’s Center in Los Angeles.

This week the center, which helps women overcome homelessness and chronic unemployment, opened a second store, a resale clothing boutique that also carries some of the home decor and gifts from Made by DWC.

If you missed it the first time around, read L.A. Times staff writer Mary MacVean’s post from a year ago on the original gift store’s offerings. Many of the Made by DWC products -- lavender soaps, soy candles poured into vintage china tea cups and felt Christmas ornaments -- were crafted by women on L.A.’s skid row as part of a vocational training program.

The candle holders -- just $8 apiece -- are imports from China, but 100% of proceeds go to the Downtown Women’s Center programs.

During a visit to the store earlier this week, inventory of the candle holders was limited, but Made by DWC was well stocked with picture frames, cards, candles and other gifts that would look right at home on shelves of an Abbot Kinney or Beverly Boulevard boutique. That fish-scale pattern looks every bit as good in daylight as it does at night.

The original Made by DWC store (with parking lot) is at 438 S. San Pedro St., (213) 213-2881. The new resale boutique is a few blocks away at 325 Los Angeles St., Los Angeles, (213) 225-8020.
