Mid-century beach house

Nathan Turner divides his book into three California living styles: beach, city and country. In his take on a mid-century beach house, the base of the seating is upholstered in a fabric by Lulu DK, and the cushions are in complementary solids. "Let's face it," Turner writes, "the pattern is busy. If I made the entire sofa in that print, I would have had one of those Gloria Vanderbilt-type situations where I do the walls and curtains and then a jumpsuit all in the same crazy pattern." To balance all that color, he chose a neutral backdrop: seagrass on the floor with a Flokati rug, and budget-friendly matchstick blinds from blinds.com. In the dining area, he used a plain table surrounded by simple wicker chairs from Pottery Barn.
