Pasadena Heritage home tour goes Modern
The preservation group Pasadena Heritage takes a turn toward the Modern when it hosts a May 19 tour of six homes built after 1940.
Stops will include homes by Lloyd Wright, Harold Zook, Ted Tyler and Lawrence Test, plus two houses by the iconic Midcentury firm Buff & Hensman: the 1954 Norton House and the 1983 Hamlin House. Patty Judy, the Pasadena Heritage education director who organized the lineup, said the last two stops serve as chronological bookends for Buff & Hensman’s work and were the suggestion of Ted Smith, the architect who carries on the practice.
The Test house is unusual, Judy said, because it’s a 1952 redesign of what had been a 1923 bungalow built as living quarters for a gardener and chauffeur.

Tickets for the home tour are $50 and can be bought in advance online or on the day of the event at Pasadena Heritage, 651 S. St. John Ave., Pasadena, (626) 441-6333.
The tour, part of the Getty initiative “Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.,” will be preceded by presentations and a panel discussion Thursday featuring three architectural historians: Barbara Lamprecht, one of the premiere authorities on Richard Neutra’s work; critic Alan Hess, prolific author on Midcentury design; and Daniel Paul, whose work includes the nomination of Pasadena’s Pegfair Estates to the National Register of Historic Places. The program is 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd. Tickets are $20.
