Donate eveningwear to help girls and boys dress for prom

Share

For girls, prom preparation usually means looking for the perfect dress, finding jewelry that sparkles and a pair of shoes that will let them dance throughout the night, but what about the boys? They need the right gear too.

And not everyone can afford it. So the Prom Dress Project, a program sponsored by the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation, is looking to provide Southeast Los Angeles students with everything they need to dress for prom.

Now in its second year, the project is for the first time including boys and will supply the male students with suits, shirts and ties for the big night.

Hospital employees and local businesses are donating dresses, suits, shoes, accessories and cosmetics. But with 350 to 400 high school students expected to participate this year, the program is looking for more for donations. Volunteers are asking for prom dresses, evening gowns, graduation dresses, business suits, blazers, slacks, blouses and skirts, shoes, jewelry, evenings bags, makeup, ties and pocket squares. They request that all donations be modern styles, new or gently used and dry cleaned.

If you’d like to make a donation, contact Grace Mendez at (310) 900-7331 or GraceMendez@dochs.org. Donations will be accepted through March 20.

The dresses, suits and accessories will be distributed March 29 and 30 at the St. Francis Medical Center hospital auditorium. Each student will have an individual appointment with a doctor, nurse or other mentor who will help them make their wardrobe selections.

The project is also expanding to include business attire for college or employment interviews. Click here for more information on the Prom Dress Project.
