New York Fashion Week fall 2013: Altuzarra review

Share

NEW YORK -- Fur mittens.

That’s apparently what we’re going to be wearing for fall judging from the two high profile designers, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra, who showed the amusing accessories in their shows on Saturday at New York Fashion Week.

If not mittens, maybe just fur, if you are OK with it … and leather. Both are shaping up to be major touchstones for the fall 2013 season.

At Altuzarra, we saw the wildest riffs on fur yet — fur cocktail dresses.

The inspiration: The street, including the hard surfaces, horizontal and vertical lines, the glint of the pavement and the shards of color from passing cars, according to the show notes. The palette was black and white with flashes of orange and bottle green.

The look: Power babe. Sharp tailored gray wool suiting with padding to exaggerate the hips. Leather boleros layered over coats. Sexy double-breasted coat dresses. Fluid jersey dresses slit up to there with snaps, rivets and zippers accentuating the curves. Black-and-white intarsia fox fur coats swinging tails. (Insert road kill joke here.) Riffs on the biker jacket including leather pencil skirts with contouring zippers and chiffon panels. Leather turtlenecks. Leather and mink cocktail dresses. Black-and-white checkerboard booties.

The scene: New York Knicks player Tyson Chandler and his wife, Kimberly, Ivanka Trump and the Courtin-Clarins girls were in the crowd.

The verdict: Altuzarra has earned his reputation as the go-to American designer for brash and sexy, and I’m glad Hollywood is starting to take notice. (Jennifer Lawrence wore his sleeveless black dress with embellished tassel details to the BAFTA Tea last month.) But some of the padded pieces in this collection were unflattering, even on the models.
