Artist Tyler Ramsey customizing Toms

Toms shoes is offering out-of-the-box custom shoes by an L.A. artist living in a box. Tyler Ramsey is spending a week enclosed in a clear box outside the Toms boutique on Abbot Kinney in Venice. (Toms Shoes)

The fun-loving folks at Toms shoes are at it again.

Through July 29, Toms is offering custom, out-of-the-box shoes by an artist who is living in one.

Tyler Ramsey, a TV-producer-turned-artist who paints with his fingers instead of brushes and is a frequent Toms collaborator, is living inside an enclosed box in front of the Toms store on Abbot Kinney, where he's customizing shoes according to customer specifications.

(We're told that although he is living in the box around the clock, he takes new orders only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- and he is allowed to leave the box to go to the bathroom. Phew!)

Can't make it to Venice? All you have to do is call Tyler at (855) 704-3889, provide three colors and an inspiration word, and watch him create your shoes on the live webcam, which is streaming to the Toms site here.

As is always the case with the brand's One for One model, for every pair of shoes sold, Toms will donate a pair to a person in need.

Talk about putting the human touch back into retail.
