Southern California dreaming on 2013 spring runways

One of the great joys of being a fashion critic is the ability to observe how designers all over the world riff on and reinterpret the L.A. look.

Bold and bright colors at play

Designers used bold, bright strokes on the runways this season with clean, geometric lines, stripes, grids, color-blocking and cutouts, creating visions that were at times modern and at times nostalgic.

Cultural Touchstone: Peggy Moffitt

No one embodies the spirit of Mod quite like Peggy Moffitt, L.A.'s own 1960s-era muse.

Paris-based designer Isabel Marant rhapsodizes about Los Angeles the way most people rhapsodize about her hometown.

Aurelie Bidermann jewelry line inspired by Southern California scene

The mix of casual and glam is what has made Paris-based jewelry designer Aurélie Bidermann a fashion world favorite. She's made modern-day heirlooms out of one-of-a-kind pieces of vintage cotton lace, dipping them into 18-karat gold, and molding them into cuffs with a weathered patina. And she's elevated the humble friendship bracelet to must-have status, using gold hardware to anchor the braided threads and give the pieces strength and permanence.

Hair: Delicate decorations top off the season

Nothing captures summer's sunny joie de vivre like a devil-may-care hairstyle polished off with a pretty hair ornament. Head-turning hair accessories were front and center in the spring runway collections. Satin bow headbands topped off '60s-inspired beehives at Louis Vuitton, while silk faille hair bands decorated with oversized fabric flowers bloomed on as-low-as-you-go ponytails at Rochas. The nape of the neck became an alluring new focus, with large pearls adorning loose chignons at Chanel and ornately carved dragon hairpins gracing half-updos at Emilio Pucci. At Dolce & Gabbana and Marc by Marc Jacobs, hair was twisted and pinned up, almost as an afterthought, to showcase colorful, patterned head scarves.

These boots were made for gawking

They are a distant relative of the sandals originally worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans. At the spring-summer 2013 fashion collections, designers such as Tom Ford, Alexander Wang and Joseph Altuzarra featured innovative knee-high-and-above versions on the runways, taking shoe envy to new heights. They are arrestingly sexy. And for many, they summon up a blow-the-wheels-off-your-chariot feeling of female empowerment. Some ladies might even take on a gladiator mentality if it came down to a fellow shopper reaching for the single pair left in her size.

White hot red carpet trend

Hollywood has had a love affair with head-turning white gowns both on-screen and off for more than half a century. Who can forget Marilyn Monroe's white Travilla halter dress billowing around her waist as she stands atop a subway grate in the 1955 film "The Seven Year Itch"? Or Audrey Hepburn's sleeveless, belted white floral lace dress, designed by Edith Head, from the last scene of the 1953 film "Roman Holiday"? The actress liked it so much, she wore it a second time, when she picked up her lead actress award at the 1954 Oscars ceremony. The recent craze for white on the red carpet kicked off at last year's Academy Awards, when Gwyneth Paltrow wowed in a minimalist white gown and matching cape by Tom Ford. Here are a few more of our favorite white-hot looks from recent months.
