Coachella’s female fashion tastemakers
Robyn
It’s turning out to be a good year for electro pop singer Robyn, 31, who landed one of the covers of Elle magazine’s May music issue, after cleaning up at the Swedish Grammys in January. She first burst on the scene in the late 1990s, with dance hits like “Do You Know What It Takes.” But with three album releases last year (“Body Talk,” Parts 1, 2 and 3), she’s attracting a whole new generation of fans with her platinum tomboy hair and punk style.
Robyn (born Robin Miriam Carlson) likes to pair bike shorts or patterned leggings with multiple belts, cropped jean jackets and tough-looking boots, including Timberlands with creeper soles. When it comes to designers, she often turns to Jeremy Scott (she wore his gas-pump print leggings when she performed in New York City in August). The L.A. designer calls her “a genuine friend” and says, “I love the dichotomy of her being this spunky, punky Swedish girl with a boy haircut and a bra and bustier.”
Marina and the Diamonds
The band’s Welsh frontwoman, Marina Lambrini Diamandis, 25, has described her style as feminine with a sense of humor. That explains the cheeky cheerleader outfits, cowboy fringe and Ashish sequined American flag dress she wore in her video for “Hollywood,” a catchy tune about her love-hate relationship with American pop culture from her 2010 debut album, “The Family Jewels.” “I’m obsessed with the mess that’s America,” she sings. In her “I Am Not a Robot” video, she sports a wide array of looks, including sparkly body paint and individually applied face jewels.
She’s fearless about fashion offstage too. Besides Ashish, she likes designers Jean Jacques de Castelbajac (a mini-dress with a cartoonish hippo face on the front) and Hasan Hejazi (who named a dress in his spring collection after her). When it comes to makeup, you’ll rarely catch her without perfect lipstick.
Bethany Cosentino
A former child actress who appeared in commercials for Little Caesars and Pepsi, Bethany Cosentino, 24, is the voice behind Best Coast, whose sound is a cross between the Beach Boys and the Ronettes.
An L.A. native, it took a move to New York (to study creative writing) to make her really appreciate the West Coast. Now she’s back, living in Eagle Rock and singing about boys and breakups in songs such as “Boyfriend” and “When I’m With You” from her debut album, “Crazy for You.”
She’s proclaimed her love for the Rodarte for Opening Ceremony collection and 1980s Valley Girl style. When it comes to shopping, it’s usually vintage. Think floral rompers, sundresses and cute sunglasses.
Robyn and Marina and the Diamonds are scheduled to perform at Coachella on April 15; Cosentino and Best Coast are scheduled to perform April 17.
