Clothes that tell stories
The year 2012 was full of films that captured the essence of memorable time periods through costume. Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” was brought to life by designer Joanna Johnston’s stovepipe hats and wool shawls, for instance. And what would the film “Anna Karenina” be without costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s lavish bustle-back gowns?
The FIDM Museum and Galleries in downtown Los Angeles is celebrating those magical feats in costume design by showcasing more than 100 designs from 2012 films during its 21st annual “Art of Motion Picture Costume Design.”
The exhibition opens Tuesday. Costumes from all five of the Academy Award costume design nominees will be on display, including some of Durran’s pieces from “Anna Karenina,” “Les Misérables” costumes by Paco Delgado, “Lincoln” costumes by Johnston, “Mirror Mirror” costumes by Eiko Ishioka and “Snow White and the Huntsman” costumes by Colleen Atwood.
There also will be costumes from “Django Unchained” by Sharen Davis, “The Hunger Games” by Judianna Makovsky, “Skyfall” by Jany Temime, “Hitchcock” by Julie Weiss and more.
The exhibition at the museum, 919 S. Grand Ave., is free and runs through April 27. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, visit https://www.fidmmuseum.org.
