"Hatchet"
By Gary Paulsen
Your parents have just divorced because of an awful secret that you know about. What more could go wrong, right? Wrong. You could get in a plane crash and be stranded in the Canadian wilderness for over a month with nothing but a hatchet and your courage. This is what happens to Brian Robeson in "Hatchet."
Brian is in a single-engine plane. He is on his way to visit his father, who now lives in the Canadian oil fields. When the pilot dies, Brian takes the wheel but the plane crashes. He survives, but can he survive the wilderness? Far from any human habitation, Brian must defend himself from wildlife and brace himself for Mother Nature. Brian is as smart as he is brave, and he soon realizes that the hatchet is his key to survival. Will he be rescued or will he be lost forever?
