'Account of a Visit From St. Nicholas'
* Part 1
Home Edition, Calendar, Page E-16 Calendar Desk 10 inches; 352 words
By Jennifer James, Times Staff Writer
THE flames from the fireplace danced merrily in my eyes. It was Christmas Eve and there was magic in the air.
"Do you have your hot apple cider, Jenny?" asked Grandpa.
"Yes!" I answered.
"I have a surprise for you," Grandpa said.
"What a beautiful book! Is it for me?" I asked.
"Yes, it is all yours. Do you notice anything different about it?"
I looked closely. Then all at once I saw it: "Account of a Visit From St. Nicholas," by Anonymous.
"Who is 'Anonymous' "? I asked.
"It means the author did not want his name known."
"I wonder why."
"We'll never know."
"Read it to me, Grandpa." I snuggled next to him and leaned my head on his arm.
"Is St. Nicholas the same as Santa Claus?" I asked.
"Yes he is. He has other names too: Kris Kringle and Father Christmas."
"Have you ever seen Santa Claus?"
"No, I haven't."
