We've been downers lately and we'd like to apologize. Who are we to complain about glorious summer weather at the end of October? So this weekend, hit the beach, strike up the barbecue, make some sangria (because you can) and talk about this:
The next superfruit: This week, The Times' Booster Shots blog mused on what would be this year's "it" fruit, mentioning the maqui berry as a possibility. Earlier this year, the mangosteen, mentioned in the blog post, seemed destined for the limelight. In Vietnam, mangosteens are very common. The last time I was in Vietnam (2006), you could buy them for a little more than the price of grapes or apples. I wonder how my aunt in Vietnam, who probably eats mangosteens every day, would react if I told her mangosteens are superfruits (though, I don't think the Vietnamese have a word for this) and that if you juice them, you can sell the juice for about the equivalent of her weekly food budget. -- Jason La

Vegan and vegetarians are having a moment: Vegan bloggers, led by noted vegan chef Isa Moskowitz, have been leading the charge in this Vegan Month of Food. (We joined in, too, over at the Daily Dish.) L.A.-based chef Tal Ronnen, author of the new cookbook "The Conscious Cook," was on Oprah this week, and the O called him the best vegan chef she knows. (How's that for an endorsement?) And actress Alicia Silverstone, whose new book "The Kind Diet," is out this month, says she credits her meat-free diet with keeping her looking much younger than her 33 years. (We saw her at the New York City Wine & Food Festival. She had no makeup and she looked like she'd be carded if she walked into a liquor store.) -- Rene Lynch

Balloon mom admits the hoax: We told you this story was going to stay around for a while. Although we'll see what kind of legs it has now that Mayumi Heene has told authorities that the whole thing was a hoax. Weirdly, dad isn't copping to anything. -- Deborah Netburn
Conversation starter: Are we sick of balloon boy yet?
L.A. is the deli capital of the world? David Sax, author of "Save the Deli" suggests that L.A. is the deli capital of the world. My knee-jerk reaction is "no way," but on second thought, I'm willing to go on the record saying that Langer's makes the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had in my life. And I'm speaking as a former New Yorker. -- Deborah Netburn
Conversation starter: I know where to get good pastrami, but where can you get good lox in this town?
