It’s a gem of a deal

An One inexpensive way to update classics in your closet -- that cashmere crew neck, black dress or blazer-and-blouse combo -- is fun statement jewelry. At House of Love and Luck, a budget version of Fred Leighton, eye-catching vintage baubles, reworked pieces and trendy new looks such as bolo ties are priced under $300, with the bulk of them less than $100.

House of Love and Luck proprietor Ricki Miller, a Calabasas native, lucked into this La Cienega Boulevard storefront when pal Jared Meisler, who owns Bar Lubitsch and formerly ran Bar Marmont, leased the space next door for a speak-easy and offered Miller a 500-square-foot spot where she could sell the fruits of her years spent hunting estate sales. The shop has an eclectic bohemian French boudoir feel.

Lately, she’s been stocking up on multi-strand necklaces (one with an amethyst stone is $225), cameos, coral and turquoise pieces (“very now in fashion,” she says), and chunky faux-gold and enamel bracelets ($25 to $50). There are also some collector finds: a circa 1905 “mourning” hair comb and Vendome bib necklace with enamel flowers (both $250).

Reworked jewelry is by Nola Singer, who takes antique brooches and tie clips and turns them into pendants, rings and bracelets. The store also does repair work and adapts antique clip-on earrings for today’s pierced ears with 14-karat and stainless steel stems.
