THE FOG HAS LIFTED

Burberry, the brand that brings to mind cool British style, iconic plaid and trench coats, sheds its accustomed wraps and takes an unbuttoned approach to summer with two new fragrances that seem an oddly good fit for Southern California.

The Burberry summer scents for men and women are a concoction of tangy and aquatic notes so light and sparkling they almost seem to dance on the surface of the skin.

The women’s scent ($63 for 3.4 fluid ounces) has red currant, lychee, mandarin and Riesling top notes that taken together have the fresh appeal of a grapefruit squeezed straight on the skin. But middle notes of rose and base notes of musk and white cedar temper the juiciness into a more round and woody finish.

The men’s version ($57 for 3.4 fluid ounces) is a clean scent with abundant marine notes that smell a little soapy, but not heavy. The lime, icy mint and Granny Smith apple top notes make for a crisp start, and amaris wood, cedar and amber in the dry-down keep the scent earthy and masculine.

The Burberry name may be synonymous with urban living, but even chic city dwellers escape in the summer. And these two scents, dissolving into air and ocean, can take you straight to the beach.
