Steve Shaw’s Venice atelier features an array of tactile surfaces. Here’s how to get the look.
GLASS TILE
In the master bathroom, a wall of Venetian-style glass tiles (available in 12-by-12-inch sheets) shimmers in a bold orangy-red. The unusual black grout makes the color pop. Liberty glass tile in “Tiffany,” by special order. Import Tile Center, Santa Monica, (310) 451-0644
STAGGERED WOOD
Medium-density fiberboard, cut into 4-foot-long panels of varying thicknesses, creates a tactile staggered wall behind the bed. The panels are glued onto the wall, then painted with five coats of creamy-white tinted Venetian plaster, the last coat of which is sanded with automotive-grade sandpaper. Jason Fletcher Studio, Los Angeles, (310) 429-1644
ALUMINUM TILES
Cast-aluminum polished tiles with a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired pattern add shine to the living room wall. LF Tile, Studio Four, Encino, (818) 907-9373; www.studio04la.com
WEEPING JOINTS
Stacked 2-by-4s are filled with concrete that seeps between the boards to create a tactile “weeping-joint” wall in the entry. The boards are removed after the concrete cures, leaving their imprint. Creative Masonry, Los Angeles, (310) 821-2606; www.creativemasonry.net
GLOSSY CINDERBLOCK
A plain-Jane cinderblock wall in the guest bedroom gets a splash of drama with primer followed by four coats of high-gloss, oil-based paint in charcoal black. Farrow & Ball Off Black (No. 57), by special order. Cox Paint, Santa Monica, (310) 393-7208
CONCRETE PANELS
Lightweight concrete panels are stacked like bricks and glued to the gallery wall, then waxed and rubbed with rags to create depth. Chris Buzzell, Buzzell Design, Venice, (310) 617-2525; www.buzzelldesign.com
