More than hot air
The beauty market is flooded with gadgets promising people with curly hair frizz-free, angelic ringlets. And some of us with temperamental tresses want to believe. We’ll try anything to get soft, sculpted and lightweight curls. If you’ve got a drawer at home jammed with blow dryers, nozzles, diffusers and a tangled mess of cords, chances are you’ve been looking for a solution too.
In search of the perfect curl, we came across the DevaFuser, a funny-looking, green, five-pronged blow dryer attachment that brings to mind Kermit the Frog’s webbed hand. It was just strange enough that we had to give it a try.
The claim
The curious device is designed to rest underneath your hair, drying it at the roots, instead of just on the surface. The air flow is distributed throughout the hair to dry it more quickly and efficiently without disturbing the shape of the curls, overheating or creating frizz.
The test drive
The DevaFuser comes with a universal adapter that attaches to any blow dryer. After I got used to the cumbersome “hand,” the directions were easy to follow. Starting at the temples, I positioned the fingers of the DevaFuser underneath my long hair for two minutes until that area was dry, moving from one side of my head to the other and progressing from the top to the back and the damp ends. It took 15 minutes -- considerably longer than the five minutes it takes with a regular diffuser.
The verdict
Despite the extra 10 minutes tacked onto my morning routine, the DevaFuser is a winner, especially in the fight to control frizz. It left my hair softer and shinier, with no flyaways, and worked much better than the bowl-shaped diffusers and foam socks I have tried. The odd shape makes it awkward to travel with, but for those who battle frizz daily, it’s worth making room.
