Pop

TODAY

Red Sparowes, Russian Circles The ominous, the harrowing, the howling -- thus echoes the new (no umlauts, please) metal. Sparowes, containing members from similarly outré ensembles (e.g., Isis, Battle of Mice), are begging for a soundtrack to be tossed at them; Russian Circles, a trio implying more numerous personnel, pursue more parts-oriented compositions. Echoplex, 1152 Glendale Blvd., Echo Park. 8:30 p.m. $12. (213) 413-8200.

FRIDAY

Beth Orton This English romantic started freaking on folk a decade before the latest trend, laying her lacy vocals over electronic beats and ghostly guitars. Her current release, "The Comfort of Strangers," puts her more solidly in the Sandy Denny tradition she can't help but deal with. El Rey Theatre, 5515 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $27.50. (323) 936-4790.

SATURDAY

Ray Davies The Kinks frontman and chief songwriter has long plumbed the nooks and crannies of working-class life in his native England. Since moving to the U.S. several years ago, he's turned his ever-discerning eye toward the idiosyncrasies about contemporary life in America. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 8:30 p.m. $45-$59.50. (213) 380-5005.

SUNDAY

Avett Brothers "New-grass" is a specious concept, but this crack trio updates traditional hillbilly instrumentals with fiery vigor backed up by whiz-bang arrangements and virtuosic playing. El Rey Theatre, 5515 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $19. (323) 936-4790.

MONDAY

Justice Drugged-up filter disco was the hotness in '07, and now Paris' dynamic duo tries to prolong the magic with more dizzying bass edits, schoolyard chants and arch death metal allusions. Mayan Theatre, 1038 S. Hill St., L.A. 8 p.m. $30. (213) 746-4674.

Jazz

TODAY

Kenny Garrett Quartet This saxophonist's latest CD, "Beyond the Wall," was Grammy-nominated in 2006. Catalina Bar & Grill, 6725 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. Today-Sat. (323) 466-2210.

Pharoah Sanders Quartet This saxophonist's 1960s musical forays with John Coltrane are the stuff of jazz legend -- furious, creative innovation that led audiences to new and unfamiliar musical frontiers. Now 67, Sanders' most recent CD, "The Creator Has a Master Plan," was released in 2003. Jazz Bakery, 3233 Helms Ave., Culver City. Today-Sat. (310) 271-9039.

SATURDAY
