Rubberbandance at Irvine Barclay Theatre, Luckman Fine Arts Complex

STRETCHING BOUNDARIES

The roots of native son Victor Quijada’s Montreal-based hip-hop/contemporary company Rubberbandance can be traced back to his days as a young student and B-boy at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. “That’s when I started seeing what artists like Dalí and Picasso had done with challenging the conventions of things,” says Quijada. “I wondered if there was any room in hip-hop for that.” After stints with Twyla Tharp and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal, Quijada found his formula for flipping the hip-hop script. As the dancers stretch genre boundaries – and their limber bodies – in “Elastic Perspective Redux,” you’ll see why Quijada earned the nickname “Rubberband” in the clubs and ciphers of his hometown.
