Class 8A-7A-6A Coach of the Year

Melvin Randall

Blanche Ely

Comment: Randall led the Tigers to their second consecutive Class 7A state championship and a 27-1 record. Their lone loss, 72-62 to St. John Bosco (Calif.), came in the Chick-Fil-A Classic championship game in Columbia, S.C. in December. The Tigers' 58-50 win against Orlando Evans in the 7A final allowed them to join Dillard (2000-03) and Pine Crest (2008-09) as the only schools in Broward County history to win back-to-back boys basketball state titles. "This team has definitely created [its] own identity and has definitely put themselves [at a place] for me to say this is the best team I've ever coached now," said Randall, who has coached five state championship teams. "To be ranked No. 1 [in the state] all year long with a target on your back and finish the job, it's definitely a team that stands at the top for me."
