The PBS cooking show, "Twice as Good," is truly a double delight.
Seven-year-old twins Delaney and Hadley Robertson, of Fort Lauderdale, star in the TV show "by kids, for kids" that airs on WLRN Learn and more than 270 other PBS stations. The 30-minute episodes, filmed in the family's Rio Vista kitchen, feature the adorable twosome in a rainbow of matching aprons and hair bows.
In Food Network style, the girls whip up easy-to-make dishes like Awesome Asian icky sticky chicken, Peppermint crunchie cookies and Bugs on a branch while dispensing interesting food facts.
"We used to pretend we had a cooking show in our bedroom. Like Giada or Paula," says Hadley, who is a minute older than Delaney. "We have a pretend kitchen upstairs with pretend food. We played restaurant."
"Now we like to cook eggs, chicken, potatoes and cakes for real," adds Delaney. "We like to keep it healthy, so you can be strong."
Mom Shannon Robertson does all the prep and provides smiling encouragement during filming, as the fraternal twins stand shoulder-to-shoulder on custom-made risers so they can reach the counter.
"It's been surprising and fun," says Robertson, who home-schools the girls. "It's been good for them to learn presentation skills.
"It's really nice taping here because it's very homey. Between takes, they can relax and play with dolls and then get back to taping. As long as it's fun, we will keep doing it."
The girls' pretend play turned to reality after father, Johnathan Robertson, two years ago learned a production company was looking for a fresh cooking show concept, says Shannon Robertson.
Episodes began airing on PBS stations in August. All 13 shows can be viewed online at TwiceAsGoodShow.com.
Each episode — with fun themes like "Fabulous French," "Pet Party" for furry friends and "Cool School Snacks" — showcases four to five recipes made with whole grains, organic fruits and veggies, and lean meats.
"We don't cook lots of red meat and aren't heavy on desserts," Robertson says. "We substitute ground chicken for beef. We like to make things that are healthful, attractive and yummy. We try to find alternatives to less healthy ingredients."
"Twice as Good" is a family affair. Robertson, 44, and her mother, Judy Webb of Amelia Island, develop and test recipes and prep ingredients on production days. Brother Peyton, 11, a fifth-grader at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, frequently makes on-air appearances along with Mom or Grandma to help with hot pans and sharp utensils.
Robertson explains their safety-first policy.
"We worry about hot pots and knives. We are very careful in the kitchen. We want our young viewers to be safe," Robertson says, as bright red bows bob in unison beside her.
"We always have an adult helper," Hadley said. "When we made Egg drop soup, we kept telling everyone at home to have an adult help so no one gets burned."
The show's second season begins filming in May. So Webb and Robertson are busy formulating and testing upcoming recipes, with a standout being Kale and apple chips.
So far, Hadley's favorite show was "Pet Party."
"We made a doggie birthday cake with peanut butter icing and bacon decorations for our dogs Cody, Copper and Little Man," she says of the family's three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
"Cody liked the icing and Little Man loved the bacon. He ate the whole roll," Hadley adds, giggling.
Delaney's favorite episode was "Awesome Asian."
"I liked making the Egg drop soup," Delaney says. "It was like a science experiment because you can watch the egg separate and you have to stir it the right way. Plus, it tasted great."
When they aren't rattling pots and pans in front the cameras, the twins do gymnastics and ballet, golf and play with their identical American Girl dolls.
"Our dolls cook," Hadley says. "They have a kitchen and a banquet table, too."
