Bludso’s Bar & Que is having a free hog dinner Monday in honor of the BCS title game. The restaurant will serve a whole smoked pig to customers on a first-come-first-serve basis until the meat runs out. Jeff Michaud, the chef behind Marc Vetri’s Philadelphia restaurants Osteria and Alla Spina, will cook a dinner at Animal restaurant Tuesday to support his first cookbook, “Eating Italy.” Michaud will prepare a four-course, family-style meal of carne salata with red onion, celery and olive oil; pear and Treviso salad with Taleggio dressing; squash gnocchi with amaretti and mostarda; fettucine with braised rabbit and porcini; pork shank osso buco with saffron rice crema; heirloom apple upside-down cake with polenta gelato and pistachio flan with chocolate sauce. Dinner is $75 per person and includes a copy of Michaud’s book. There is an optional $40 wine pairing. The Culinary Historians of Southern California present long-time Los Angeles Times Food section writer Charles Perry speaking on “A Feast for the Nose: The Perfumed Banquet in Old Damascus” Jan. 11. The lecture will take place at the Los Angeles Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Perry will speak about the aroma-focused medieval Arab banquets with samples of perfumes from medieval recipes.
