It’s been a big year for craft beer in Los Angeles, and 2014 is only a week old. Two of Los Angeles’ craft beer trailblazers are getting national attention, but a ground-breaking, loved personality died.

Los Angeles craft beer maven takes national stage

The Lady Behind Ladyface Ale Companie -- Cyrena Nouzille -- has been elected to the Brewers Assn. board of directors. Ladyface is one of the first “new wave” brewpubs in the Los Angeles area, and it opened around the same time as the other pioneering L.A. craft breweries, Strand and Eagle Rock. Nouzille is credited by many as a leader in the L.A. industry, and she can now lend her leadership and passion for advocacy to the Brewers Assn. efforts to “promote and protect small and independent American brewers, their craft beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts” on a national scale.

Raise a glass to the memory of an L.A. beer pioneer

The L.A. beer community lost a pioneer Wednesday when Sam Samaniego died. Samaniego was proprietor of San Gabriel’s iconic Stuffed Sandwich, where he had championed craft beer since was called microbrew. Since he opened the Stuffed Sandwich in 1976, he had been responsible for turning on countless Angelenos to the flavors of craft beer. Samaniego is survived by his wife -- and Stuffed Sandwich co-founder and beer pioneer in her own right -- Marlene Samaniego.
