Select Beer Store, the popular craft beer bottle shop and bar in Redondo Beach, is turning three. And to mark that happy occasion, it's releasing the third iteration of Select Monk -- a collaboration beer made with Monkish Brewing in Torrance. The new brew, a multigrain Belgian tripel, includes oats and wheat for added body.
"We wanted to keep a simple grain bill and hopping and let the yeast shine," says Select Beer Store founder Wes Jacobs, who's been home-brewing for 20 years.
A strain of Belgian yeast most often used in farmhouse ales was used to ferment the beer to provide a complex spice character, and then it was dry hopped with Sterling and Sorachi Ace hops for a zesty, herbal aroma. Select Monk 3 will be available on draft and in bottles on on March 12 to kick off the shop's third-anniversary celebration. It also will be available at the Monkish tasting room.
"Wes and his team were here for the whole process," says Monkish founder and brewmaster Henry Nguyen. "It's great to have the help, especially when bottling. And Wes with his home-brew background and more scientific mind understands the process."
On March 14, Select Beer will hold a 3rd Anniversary Extravaganza Blowout Party, including a special tap list of local favorites and food from Barley Hops Grill. The party starts at noon and goes until closing.
Select Beer has earned a reputation as one of the premiere craft beer retailers in Los Angeles thanks to Jacobs' obsession with stocking the coolers, shelves and taps with the best brews around. His affable personality behind the bar hasn't hurt either, and the shop has developed a dedicated following of South Bay locals who often pop in for a pint and some conversation with the always entertaining Jacobs.
