Walker based grocery chain Meijer has announced that a generic substitute for the drug Lipitor will be available for free at all Meijer pharmacy locations.

Meijer says they will be the first retailer in the Midwest to offer the generic cholesterol medication alternative for no cost to consumers. Customers can get up to 30 pills per fill in 10, 20, 40 and 80 milligram strengths. A prescription is required.

The company started offering free medications in 2006 with select antibiotics. In 2008 they added some prenatal medications to the program, and a type-2 diabetes medication in 2010.

In all, the company says the program has saved consumers well over $300 million in medication costs.
