Woman Suffers Broken Arm in Two Vehicle Crash

A 26 year old woman from Grand Haven Township was taken to the hospital with a broken arm this afternoon after the car she was driving crashed into the back of a Freightliner truck along U.S. 31 in Ottawa County.

The accident happened around 2:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 31 near Ferris Street.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says 26 year old Mary Baars of Grand Haven Township may have fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed into the back of a truck driven by a 53 year old man from Grand Rapids.

The truck had just begun to accelerate after the light had turned green at Ferris, according to police.

Baars was initially trapped in her vehicle after it stopped 6 to 8 feet under the truck.  Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue was able to extricate her from the vehicle.  She was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community hospital and is listed in good condition.

The driver of the truck involved in the accident wasn't injured.

Baars was cited at the scene for careless driving, a $180 fine.

The accident closed lanes of U.S. 31 for about an hour this afternoon.  The scene was cleared around 3:45 p.m.
