The stand-up comedian and star of "Chico and the Man" was doing well in his career, having signed a multi-year deal with NBC in late 1976. His personal life, however, didn't look as rosy. His wife Katherine Cochran, with whom he had son Freddie Prinze, Jr., filed for divorce because of his escalating drug dependence. On Jan. 28, 1977, Prinze made a series of farewell phone calls to friends, family and his management. Manager Marvin "Dusty" Snyder arrived at Prinze's hotel room to reason with him, but Prinze proceeded to pull out a gun and shoot himself in the head. He had emergency surgery, but was removed from life support the next day and declared dead. He was only 22-years-old. Although the death was initially deemed a suicide, it was later ruled as an "accidental shooting due to the influence of Quaaludes."
