Edward Alexander Bouchet (September 15, 1852 - October 28, 1918)

Born in New Haven, Bouchet was the first black American to earn a Ph.D. from an American university.  He was also the first black American to graduate from Yale University in 1874, as stated by <a href="http://www.yale.edu/opa/arc-ybc/v31.n2/story1.html">Yale University</a>.
