If chugging along the tracks through miles of tree-lined territory decorated by nature's paintbrush sounds appealing, you'll want to check out the schedule for Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. Fall foliage trips run Oct. 1 to Oct. 26.

Getting There: From Route 9 take exit 3, take a right at the end of the ramp, Essex Station is on the left. The 2.5-hour Steam Train & Riverboat Connection trip costs $26 for adults, $17 for children age 2-11. The one-hour Steam Train only trip runs $17 adults, $9 children, Family fare (2 adults and up to 6 kids), $80 for train and riverboat, $50 for train only.
