Vincent LaMarca (Robert DeNiro) is a respected New York City homicide detective who has always lived with the fact that his father was executed for killing a young child when LaMarca was only a boy.
Despite his successes, he lives a lonely life, always at arm's length from his girlfriend (Frances McDormand) and getting close only to his partner Reg (George Dzundza).
But when he discovers the prime suspect in a murder case he is investigating is his estranged son (James Franco), he is forced to return home to the decaying boardwalks of Long Beach, Long Island to confront the darkness of his past.
During the course of the investigation, he realizes that his failures as a father -- and his unresolved anguish about the painful estrangement -- have deeply influenced his son's life.
