RHAM's Chrissy Bendzinski had an up-and-down season, but finished her junior year on a strong note, with a runner-up finish in the State Open, three seconds behind the winner, NFA's Brianna Lenehan. Bendzinski won the CCC championship, finished second at the Wickham Invitational to Stephanie Deccy and third in the Class MM.
Deccy, a Lewis Mills-Burlington senior, had a great year, winning the Wickham Invite's championship race and the Class M title.
Avon, which won the Class MM title, went from last place (22nd) to second at the State Open, led by junior Rachael Rosow, who finished fourth. Ridgefield won the girls title. "This is a surreal feeling," Rosow said that day. "We came in dead last last year in the State Open and here we are." Rosow was also the Class M runner-up.
The State Open had to move its date from Friday to Sunday, after Hurricane Sandy blew through the area, with its power outages and school closings. The meet was still held at Wickham Park, unlike the year before when the park was damaged by the October snowstorm and the meet was held 10 days later at Hammonasset State Park in Madison.
Tolland won its second consecutive Class M title after graduating four seniors in the top seven.
