Preview capsules for area high school wrestling teams which responded to The Courant's request for information:

CCC North


Last Year: 4-7

Coach: Jason Marsh

Top athletes: Make Ragazzi, Sr., 160; Jake Gonzalez, Jr., 145; Sean Mooney, So., 120; Forest Dolby, Sr., 140 (Cheney Tech)

A note: East Catholic faces a challenging schedule as a Class S school in a predominantly Class LL conference. The Eagles finished 19th in Class S last year and returns a young team. Forest Dolby, a one-man team from Cheney Tech, practices with East Catholic and was a runner-up in the State Open at 140.


Last Year: 17-0

Coach: Jude Knapp

Top athletes: Casey Mitchell, Jr., 152; Sam Odell, Jr., 145; Conor Caffrey, So., 113; John Labonte, Sr., 160

A note: South Windsor went undefeated and finished the year ranked sixth in the coaches poll. Mitchell, Odell and Caffrey each placed in the Class LL meet last season, but are stepping up in weight class for 2011-12.

CCC South


Last Year: 17-6

Coach: Jim Day

Top athletes: Ethan Greider, So., 112; Rich Schlichting, So., 126; Kevin Pirruccio, Jr., 119; Ryan Ogden, So., 132; Rick Mullins, Jr., 152; Jordan Zima, Jr., 160; Jake Eliades, So., 145

A note: Hall-of-Famer Jim Day returns to coach the Redcoats after a four-year absence. The team finished fourth in Class M last season, but returns an inexperienced group. Sophomores Ethan Greider and Jake Eliades will lead Berlin after second and third-place finishes, respectively, in Class M last season.

CCC East


Last Year: 1-19

Coach: Paul Courtois

Top athletes: Zack Gardnier, Sr., 182; Josh Gluz, Sr., 138; Julia Smith, Sr., 128; Ethan Hotchkiss, Sr., 145.

A note: First-year coach Paul Courtois takes over a team that finished 19th in Class M last year. Rockville is young, after graduating only two lettermen from the team.

CCC West


Last Year: 24-3

Coach: Eric Misko

Top athletes: Matt Natale, Sr., 120; Garrett Hastings, Jr., 126; Ryan Rigney, So., 138; Eric Suhre, Sr., 108

A note: Farmington went 24-3 last season and only lost one key starter. Natale, Hastings and Rigney each placed in the Class LL tournament.


Last Year: 8-3

Coach: Derek Dion

Top athletes: Tyler Mirando, Sr., 106; Nate Solomon, Jr., 126; Ryan Dupuis, Jr., 145; Travis Daly, Jr., 285

A note: The Blue Knights lost only one senior from last year's 8-3 team. This season's senior class includes Tyler Mirando who was 24-9 and placed fifth in the State Open at 103.



Last Year: 22-6

Coach: Geoffrey Korper

Top athletes: Taylor Jacobs, Sr., 145; Nate Fair, Jr., 106; Ryan Silas, Jr., 218; Ty Soobitsky, Sr., 180

A note: Junior Nate Fair had the best season for Haddam-Killingworth last season, going 29-4 and finishing second in Class S at 106. Taylor Jacobs and Ryan Silas also placed in Class S last year. As a team, the Cougars went 22-6 and placed seventh in the Class S tournament.



Last Year: 6-9

Coach: Jason Flynn

Top athletes: Kyle Conley, Sr., 160; Paul Kluk, Sr., 170; Richard Jarnot, Jr., 152; Isiah Davies, Fr., 126

A note: East Windsor finished 7-8 last year, but only lost four starters. All weight classes will be filled with experienced wrestlers, unless one of their several young prospects starts to excell.


Last Year: 2-14

Coach: Walter Stefanow

Top athletes: Bryan Knighton, Sr.; Kayron Macon, Jr.; Kenny Prigodich, Sr.; Kiante Macon, Sr.

A note: Kenny Prigodich led the Sport Sciences and University Prep co-op, placing sixth in the Class S tournament at 171. Coach Stefanow has an experienced team returning after all of last year's starters were underclassmen.


Last Year: 11-11

Coach: Chris Potter

Top athletes: Dan D'Ostuni, Sr., 138; Kevin Bentz, Sr., 126; Ryan Hunihan, Sr., 132; Dillon Lisk, Jr., 113

A note: Suffield lost just two starters from last season's .500 team. Experience in the light and middle weight classes will help the group going forward.
