John Paul I (August 26, 1978 - September 28, 1978)

Remembered in Italy as "Il Papa del Sorriso" (The Smiling Pope), John Paul I died after only 33 days in office. His reign is among the shortest in papal history, according to the The Vatican. John Paul I was the first pope to be born in the 20th century. He was also the most recent Italian-born pope.
