Kate MacCluggage, who was last featured in the ensemble cast of Long Wharf Theatre's "It's a Wonderful Life," will play Gillian, the bewitching witch, in the the romantic comedy "Bell, Book and Candle," a co-production with Long Wharf and Hartford Stage.
Darko Tresnjak, the new artistic director of Hartford Stage, will direct the production which will play in New Haven March 7 to April 1 and in Hartford April 5 to 29.
Tresnjak staged a much praised production of the John van Druten play at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2007. Rex Harrison, Lili Palmer, Jean Adair and Larry Gates were in the original 1950 Broadway production.
MacCluggage is also an Elliot Norton Award-winner for her portrayal as Portia in "The Merchant of Venice," directed by Tresnjak and originally produced for off-Broadwa'.s theatre for a New Audience.
Also festured are Michael Keyloun (Goodspeed's City of Angels) as Nicky Holroyd, Robert Eli (Lincoln Center Theater's Saturn Returns; Hartford Stage's The 39 Steps) as Shep Henderson, Gregor Paslawsky (Goodspeed's City of Angels/Long Wharf's Travesties) as Sidney Redlitch and character actress Ruth Williamson (Broadway: Irving Berlin's White Christmas, La Cage aux Folles, The Music Man) as Aunt Queenie.
The production team includes Tony nominee (for Roundabout's Present Laughter) Alexander Dodge, scenic design; Fabio Toblini, costume design; Matt Richards, lighting design; Lindsay Jones, sound design; and Susie Cordon, production stage manager.
