Newington nursing-home workers who have been on strike almost six months are holding a rally at their picket line Saturday.
The event, to thank supporters and members of the New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199 of the Service Employees International Union, is scheduled for noon Saturday at the Newington Health Care Center, 240 Church St., and attendees are asked to park at Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington.
Santa is expected to make an appearance on the strike line, as well as a representative of U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal's office and the director of the Connecticut Working Families Party.
The workers have been on strike since July after HealthBridge, which owns and manages the nursing homes, raised health insurance costs and ended a pension.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny ordered the company to bring back workers. HealthBridge appealed to the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, which granted a request to delay the return of 600 striking nursing home workers from five unionized facilities in Newington, Milford, Westport, Stamford and Danbury.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
