The first home field for the 49ers was Kezar Stadium, which the team used from its founding in 1946 to 1971, as stated in the Associated Press. Following the 1970 season the team moved to Candlestick Park, which gave the 49ers a much more modern facility that was easier for fans to access by highway. In 2006, the 49ers presented a plan to construct a new 68,500-seat stadium in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. After failed attempts by the 49ers and the city of San Francisco to come to an agreement on the location of the new stadium, the team selected a new site in the city of Santa Clara. The stadium is planned for completion in time for the 2014 NFL season.
