Mara Lieberman is the new artistic director Bated Breath Theatre Company, which is is restructuring as “a performance collective in order to bring a wide variety of cutting-edge performances to the Hartford area.”
The not-for-profit thesater company presented a new play “Hunger” last fall at Hartford’s Real Art Ways. The company also produced full-scale productions of "A Doll's House” and "The Parkville Project.”
Lieberman, originally joined the company to devise and act in “Hunger,” succeeds founding artistic director Helene Kvale.
“Mara brings a wealth of creative experience to the company with vision and energy to boot,” says Kvale, who will remain an active member of the company. “I am excited that she is guiding Bated Breath into our next chapter.”
Said collective member Ann Sciglimpaglia: “Restructuring as a collective will enable Bated Breath to better showcase the expertise of the company's members. Performance can be made in all different spaces and at all different levels, and Bated Breath is going to make performance a part of Connecticut's everyday experience.”
Lieberman's theater career spans Chicago, New York and Hartford. She assisted Lloyd Richard's at the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater center in Waterford, and co-founded The Director's Collective in New York City.
Lieberman has a master's degree in performance studies from Northwestern University where she worked closely with Mary Zimmerman. She has taught at Trinity College, Manchester Community College and currently teaches theatre at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts.
Other changes include David Ciano, former executive assistant for “Hunger,” becoming interim managing director. Ciano worked at The Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts, the Connecticut Repertory Theater and Playhouse on Park in West Hartford.
Besides Kvale, Lieberman, Sciglimpaglia and Ciano, the collective also includes Michael Bradford, Glen Nicholes, Paul Spirito and Greg Webster.
The next Bated Breath event is a puppetry slam called “Puppet Pot Pie” at Real Art Ways on Thursday, Feb. 16 during Real Art Ways' Creative Cocktail Hour at 6 p.m. Collective member and puppet designer Spirito is spearheading this project.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
