NAME:

Originally called Rippowam after the Native American inhabitants in the area, the settlement was named Stamford in 1642. It's unknown why Stamford was chosen, since there's no record that anyone from the English town of the same name had settled there. But one legend says that two roosters, named Ayreshire and Stamforde, fought in front of the meeting house, with Stamforde winning.
