Angel McCoughtry (32), Sancho Lyttle (27) and Iziane Castro Marques combined to score 77 points as the Atlanta Dream defeated the Connecticut Sun 97-82 Friday night.
The Sun (1-1) were outscored 25-9 in the second quarter and trailed 51-32 at halftime. Atlanta outrebounded the Sun 44-30 in the game with Lyttle (17) and McCoughtry combining for 27 rebounds.
Atlanta shot 53.4 percent (39 of 73) from the field.
"I wish I had an answer," Sun coach Mike Thibault said. "Forty years of coaching, I think that was the worst half of basketball I've ever had a team play. It was just bad. Hopefully, when we get [Sandrine Gruda and Asjha Jones] back we can do a better job on the boards. Our entire focus at practice was defensive transition against their fastbreak and defensive rebounding. We were awful at both."
Tina Charles led the Sun with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Anete Jekabsone-Zogota had 13 points and Tan White 12.
"We felt like our best chance was to get them in a half-court game, and we didn't do a good job of that," Sun guard Kara Lawson said.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
