Frank Harris is a Journalism professor at Southern Connecticut State University. For several years, Harris has been fascinated with the words people use when talking about race, and has been conducting studies of the evolution of blacks in the media. Like some news paper clippings from this photo gallery show, the term "African American" was not always used. "Newspapers of the past provide an unflinching reflection of the thoughts, feelings and language of a particular place and time," Harris said.
