The Hershey Bears beat the Manchester Monarchs Sunday, earning the eighth and final playoff spot in the AHL's Eastern Conference.
And that ended the Connecticut Whale's season. The Whale, who were winless in their final six games, needed regulation losses by Norfolk and Hershey in the final day of the regular season to qualify for the playoffs.
Norfolk did lose to Providence, but Hershey did not comply. So the team is out of the playoffs for just the second time since the franchise moved from Binghamton in 1997.
It may also mean fans have seen the last of the Whale name. It's uncertain if the team will be rebranded before next season. Stay tuned in the offseason.
