Two Guys Lose Weight: Hey Mom, where’s the MEATLOAF??

Los Angeles Times

The following is a blog documenting two Los Angeles Times editors’ attempts to lose weight. It all began on Jan. 10.

First, the Monday morning weigh-in: 193 lbs. Three weeks down and 12 pounds lost. In the past week, I dropped 2 (which is much more normal). Particularly good in light of my Tuesday pig-fest.

Next, how have I been doing on Nutrisystem? Really, just fine. I’m using the app. I’m eating the food with a huge preference toward the frozen-food selections. Sunday morning, for example, I had the French toast. Just put it up in the microwave for 60 seconds and instant breakfast. Bonus: It was good.

No, it wasn’t the iHop Viva la French Toast combo. But that’s OK. That’s how I got in this situation.

The non-frozen items are good too. Had the Nutrisystem meatloaf Saturday night. And I’ll confess, I let out a few “Hey Mom! Can we get some MEATLOAF?” yelps in honor of Will Ferrell’s character Chazz Reinhold from “Wedding Crashers.”

All-in-all, things are good. Hungry at times, sure. But that’s because I’m not downing food like a garbage disposal. I’m here to lose weight and get in shape. It’s not going to be easy. But, by the same token, it’s not that hard.

By just focusing in on the 173 target weight (I’ve moved it down from 178) and seeing real progress, I know it’s achievable. And this is a pretty simple way to do it.

Working with my trainer Mike has been very helpful as well. He took it easy on me Saturday. Just worked on postural exercises. He keeps emphasizing that posture and balance are so key to your foundation. Strong foundation first.

Added bonus on Saturday: Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White was next to me on the Stairmaster. He looks great. In shape. Not quite Def Leppard’s Phil Collen, but Collen’s 16 years younger. Both of these stars are a great example. You don’t have to age. You can fight it.

So I keep getting asked: “Am I hungry? How am I dealing with it?”

Sure, I get hungry. But because I’m on a specific plan and because I know if I veer from the plan, the goal won’t be reached, I’m OK. I know the target. Last week, I fumbled the ball. On Tuesday, I cratered and had a big, honking steak. Got up the next day and stayed on the plan.
