Lenny Krayzelberg, an Olympic backstroke swimmer, decided to retire from competitive swimming in 2004 after winning four gold medals for the United States. Knowing that he wanted to continue to work in and around the water, he set up a program for children in Southern California that teaches water safety and swimming, called the Lenny Krayzelberg Swim Academy.

Mary Southwick was 34 when she developed pain on the bottom of one foot. After seeing a neurologist who said she had a nerve injury caused by dancing, she developed thrombophlebitis and was admitted to the hospital. An intern underdosed her heparin (blood thinner), and she suffered a large blood clot in a lung. This was soon followed by a heart attack, then respiratory failure, renal failure and shock.

Tracy Anderson added to her fitness empire of studios, workout DVDs and other products when she and her business partner, Gwyneth Paltrow, opened the serene, members-only Tracy Anderson Studio in Brentwood in April. Anderson, one of the best-known fitness instructors, grew up dancing and hoped to become a professional. But the patient, Michael Mosley — a British author, journalist, TV personality and doctor himself — decided to go a different route. He traveled around his own country and ours, interviewing leading researchers, then tested some of their latest findings. The result? "The Fast Diet," a bestselling book in Britain (it has nothing to do with fast food, how fast you eat or even how fast you lose weight), as well as a three-part PBS series. Childhood obesity expert Dr. Joanna Dolgoff says parents of obese children would rather talk to their kids about anything — even sex or drugs — than weight. But ignoring it could set a child up for a lifetime of health problems and emotional heartache, she said. The issue of childhood obesity, and Dolgoff's work, will get a national airing Sunday as the new season of the NBC reality weight-loss show "The Biggest Loser" adds three kids — two 13-year-olds and a 16-year-old — to the cast.

Sara Ivanhoe has always been a bit ahead of her time. The 41-year-old yoga instructor has been practicing yoga since she was in high school. At first, she had no choice: In the small Marin County town of Mill Valley where she grew up, yoga was part of her school's curriculum. Like a typical teenager, she rebelled against most things that were associated with school, but yoga was different. More than 25 years and 4.3 million yoga-videos-sold later, Ivanhoe is still at it.
