( Stephanie McGehee / Reuters ) An emergency non-surgical procedure to increase blood flow to the heart muscle is almost always necessary, researchers found in an analysis of more than 500,000 cardiac patients undergoing angioplasty or heart stent procedures. But in a non-emergency, only about half of such procedures were found to be appropriate. And almost 12% simply weren't needed. |
