An emergency non-surgical procedure to increase blood flow to <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HHA000028" title="Heart and Circulatory System" href="/topic/health/human-body/heart-circulatory-system-HHA000028.topic">the heart</a> muscle is almost always necessary, researchers found in an analysis of more than 500,000 cardiac patients undergoing angioplasty or heart stent procedures. But in a non-emergency, only about half of such procedures were found to be appropriate. And almost 12% simply weren't needed.
