New drugs show promise in treating deadly melanoma

PLX4032, or vemurafenib, is the first <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HETHT00009" title="Chemotherapy" href="/topic/health/health-treatments/chemotherapy-HETHT00009.topic">chemotherapy</a> agent directed at a specific mutation involved in the formation of skin <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HHA000073" title="Tumors" href="/topic/health/human-body/tumors-HHA000073.topic">tumors</a>, which occurs in about half of <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HEDAI0000038" title="Skin Cancer" href="/topic/health/diseases-illnesses/skin-cancer-HEDAI0000038.topic">melanoma</a> patients. Ipilimumab, marketed as Yervoy, stimulates the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HHA000031" title="Immune System" href="/topic/health/human-body/immune-system-HHA000031.topic">immune system</a> to fight tumors, and has proven to be more effective than both conventional chemotherapy and a vaccine used to treat melanoma.
