Acorn home and garden store opens in Eagle Rock

Acorn owners Maggie Lobl, Erin Tanaka and Laura Tanaka said they wanted to open a home and garden boutique in Eagle Rock because of Colorado Boulevard’s amiable vibe. “It’s so friendly here,” Lobl said. “People really walk in this neighborhood and favor local indie shops.”

Indeed, earlier this week, repeat visitors from the neighborhood stopped in to shop for gifts and peruse the sunny, welcoming space. Packed with terrariums, planters, books and ceramics, the former paintball supply store features a refreshing variety of accessories that won’t break the bank: graphic Pehr tea towels ($13.50), framed Natural Curiosities botanical prints ($60), Swaine Street Woodworking cutting boards ($50) and Turkish bath towels ($50).

The store is focused on California indoor-outdoor living, with space devoted to gardening and houseplants. “That’s what sets us apart from other stores,” said Lobl, a landscape architect. “We have a lot of living things here.” A variety of custom terrariums are in stock and can be made to order with statement indoor plants, such as a tall fiddle leaf fig tree ($134), available for local delivery for a fee. “I’ve killed more plants than anyone I know,” Lobl said. “I know which ones will survive.”

There’s also a miniature garden center in the back featuring Dr. Earth organic fertilizers, self-watering pots and Flexrake garden tools. And outdoors, a patio will eventually double the store’s 700-square-foot footprint when it opens next month. Look for workshops in the future, including a terrarium class just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Acorn is located at 1611 Colorado Blvd. in Eagle Rock. Open Tuesdays through Sundays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (323) 474-6297.
