Gift pick No. 7: Chaparral Studio terrariums

Share

Working in her Glassell Park studio, artist Bianca D’Amico combines succulents, air plants, ferns and feathers with a tiny cast of characters to create delightful worlds -- the daily pick in our Handmade Holidays Gift Guide.

D’Amico’s pieces range from small terrarium ornaments ($7) to larger hanging terrariums ($55) and custom glass planters ($150 and up). She often adds miniatures to her pieces for humor and whimsy.

“I see it as a way to create environments that flirt with your imagination and make a statement without being too aggressive,” D’Amico told the Los Angeles Times in 2011 after we spotted her work at the Unique L.A. craft show.

Characters can be customized to your preference. In the terrarium shown above, a woman and her dog walk a tightrope; in another, a woman refreshes plants with a watering can. Plants also can be customized for green thumbs (succulents, air plants, ferns, tropicals) and black thumbs (dried moss).

D’Amico also makes seed bombs (California native plant seeds in a compost mixture, $7 for a set of five) and Crack Me Open geodes (crack the rock open with a hammer and see what’s inside, $15).
D’Amico’s work can be found on her Chaparral Studio website as well as at Individual Medley, Poketo, Pergolina, Reform School and the Online Time Travel Mart.
