'California's Designing Women': Muriel Coleman

Working in post-World War II Oakland, Muriel Coleman (1917-2003) made the most with simple materials at a time when raw goods were still somewhat scarce and female entrepreneurs had limited access to capital. For this 1952 room divider, redwood shelves sit on a frame made of rebar -- Coleman's expression of modern design, with functional components exposed, serving as a key part of the finished look.
