Gift pick No. 34: Krank Press prints of California native plants

Share

Here’s an affordable present for the native plant lover: Krank Press’ numbered letterpress prints of California flora.

We love the stark beauty of the purple sage, but artist Elinor Nissley also serves up a sunny Matilija poppy (often called the fried egg flower) as well as a lovely brodiaea rendered in a bright fuchsia hue.

When we first started to cover the modern “maker” movement in 2006, letterpress was the craft du jour, with artists cranking out (literally) handmade cards, calendars and coasters. So many of those early letterpress artists later disappeared from the scene, having shifted into the custom wedding invitation and baby announcement business -- all the more reason why we’re happy to keep seeing Krank at local events with these kinds of artworks.

The letterpress prints, each on 11-by-14 sheets, are just $25 apiece. You can find them on the Krank Press shop on Etsy or at the Renegade holiday craft fair this weekend.
